On Friday we had Ava's 18 month well baby exam. She weighed 24 pounds and 5 ounces, she was 31.5 inches long. Her head size was in the 74th percentile while her body was in the 43rd. Overall her check up was great, she is hitting all her developmental milestones and is a happy social girl.
The only concern we are dealing with right now is some abnormal bloodwork regarding her thyroid. We were concerned earlier this summer with Ava's energy levels and need for copious amounts of sleep. We thought she may be anaemic from her alpha thallasemia trait, however after pursuing various tests that is not the case. What they did discover is that Ava's thyroid may be underproducing. This means she may have hypothyroidism or something called Hashimito's Thyroiditis. One of the tests is off the charts for it, the other is borderline so we will need to repeat the labs in a few weeks to know for sure. If those come back the same or worse then we will be referred to an endocrinologist at Dorenbecher. In the scheme of life there are a lot worse things a person could have to deal with as all forms of hypothyroidism can be treated with a daily pill, but, as a mom, I don't want Ava to have to deal with that for the rest of her life. It is extremely rare for a child her age to have this diagnosis as it would not be a congenital thing since all newborns are screened for it at birth and most people are diagnosed in puberty or later in adulthood. So, long story short, we are hoping for some answers as well as good news with her next set of bloodwork.
Now onto more pleasant things, a few recent pics of our girl...
