Another Day...

Today was one of those days that reminds me of where my students are coming from and makes me really sad. Events from today:
Police called for two of my students for two very different reasons. One for assault and destruction to property, another for stealing.
Another student in my class telling me how living in the shelter is getting really hard especially since his mom just took in two of his cousins that were abandoned by their mother.
Another student's parents that had to go back to their homeland yet chose to leave their child behind with family so they can learn English and get a better education then they would have back home.
A warning from the local police to our staff about a major gang house right across the street from our school and that they are expecting violence between this gang and their rival gang in the near future at this house and that as a staff we need to be aware and prepared for this.

Well, that's the short version...

Ugh, I teach eight year old's right?

Luckily I get to come how to a great husband and the cutest little girl ever!

Major gang house? Thats pleasant...not. Sounds like a perfect house for the Salem Fire Department to have a training burn at.

Daniel,

Yeah, maybe in a perfect world. Unfortunately some of our students live there too.

That is sad. Hispanic gangs? I just read an article about hispanic gangs and how their numbers are on the rise again, especially in smaller cities and rural areas. The economy has had the effect of kids joining earlier becasue it is a way to make a little money from stealing and dealing to survive. Really sad stuff...
